I’m finding it hard to reconnect with the freedom of my daily drawing practice after the month of portraits. I think for a little while I will limit the time allowed on the daily drawing, partly to force myself to be less fussy, and partly to make sure I have time to finish my other May projects!
Limited studio time today, so midnight just gets a quick color sketch for now.
I managed my drawing time poorly, so only got as far as the underpainting for this drawing. I’m posting it anyway, with a bonus snapshot of the pencil sketch.

I don’t draw people from observation much. Though I was looking at specific people as I drew this, I wouldn’t call them portraits, I’m not good enough at making likenesses. But I find it informative to observe details that can later take shape in imagination.
I went out to a pub sing with a friend, so didn’t have any studio time. I made some sketches of people I saw, but this isn’t one of them. Maybe it’s just the inner me, out on the town.
