Anyone in creative endeavors knows that the bulk of the work goes on invisibly, underground as it were, before it shows up as leaves, flowers and fruit.

And indeed in forests and beneath trees most of the work being done is underground! Like mushrooms, trees are really just the fruiting bodies of the real organism below ground.
i had not considered trees that way, it’s a beautiful inversion of my assumptions
